Goal line assistants

Postby The Rat » Fri Jun 15 2012, 21:24

Where is the logic of having the goal line assistant on the same side as the one on the side line, surely they should be on the opposite side of the goal?

Surely this should be in Euro 2012? We don't have them people on our lines... paying 6 officials? All non league sides would go bankrupt!

Geoff this occurrence does not just occurr in the Euro finals it happens whenever a match is played with a goal line assistant. When a corner is taken on the linesperson side there are two officials between the corner flag and the goal, however when a corner is taken on the opposite side their are no officials between the flag and the goal.

The answer to the question is: When the "Additional Assistant Referee" was on the opposite side of the goal to the Assistant referee, he was on the same side of the goal as the Referees patrol path("diagonal"). The powers that be decreed that if the referee followed his patrol path into the box and down to the goal line, the referee would end up right next to the AAR.

So, they moved the AAR to the same side of the goal as the AR where, at least, they would be twenty yards apart ie AAR's position near the goal post to the AR by the corner flag.

Anyway, as Ukraine found out last night, it doesn't matter one hoot which side of the frigging goal he stands, he won't get that crucial decision right!

Thanks for the reply much appreciated, it's been the subject of conversation for some time. Hope somehow these types of incidents will disappear in the major tournaments soon.
