Your best ever England team

Postby Geoff » Sat May 22 2010, 11:26

Within your lifetime what would be your line up?

Start with the year you remember from and formation and go from there...

So for me it would be around 1969-1970

4-4-2

Peter Shilton (GK) always prefered him in his prime to Gordon Banks

Viv Anderson (RB) terrible shortage of right backs in many decades
Bobby Moore (CB and Capt) Simply the best CB of all time
Terry Butcher (CB) Brilliant all blood and guts player
Ashley Cole (LB) I do believe he is the best full back in the world and pipped Stuart Pearce for it

Daviid Beckham (RM) No-one can ever touch him for crosses and set plays
Glenn Hoddle (CM) Wasn't given the starts he deserved
Paul Gascoigne (CM) One of the most talented players England ever produced
Chris Waddle (LM) Sweetest left foot this country has produced

Bobby Charlton (CF) What can you say?
Gary Lineker (CF) Would have been Englands all time top scorer but for the turnip

Manager - Can only be Alf Ramsey with Bobby Robson as his asst. Would have said Clough but he never got the opportunity.

I am sure people will say players and I'll think "Oh yeah how could I leave him out" anyway over to you...

First memories of watching football on the tv are Mexico 86 - and the best memories were Italia 90. I have picked my favourite 11 rather than best 11!

GK - David Seaman; Shilton was a better keeper I think, but Euro 96 was also great fun and Seaman played a blinder especially against the auld enemy.

RB - Paul Parker; loved Linekers goal against the Germans in the semi final '90, Parker provided the assist and the move made a yound lad very happy (for a short time)
LB - Stuart Pearce; Cole is class but Pearce was all heart
CB - Des Walker; as a Wednesday fan I love him anyway, awesome at his peak.
CB - Terry Butcher; close call with Tony Adams, but the bloodied bandage is an iconic photo that swung it for me.

RM - David Beckham; inspirational for a number of years and full of quality
LM - Chris Waddle; second favourite player of all time (after David Hirst  )
CM - Paul Gascoigne; I used to like Spurs just because of him - IMO was the best player in the world at his peak.
CM - David Platt; goal scoring midfielder and the one against Belgium in Italia 90 was emotional!

ST - Gary Lineker; hat trick against Poland with the bandaged arm was one of my first memories - loved it.
ST - Michael Owen; coin flip with Alan Shearer

My Best England Team: (since 1990 World Cup)

GK: David Seaman

DR: Gary Neville
DL: Ashley Cole ; But very much liked Stuart Pearce, in the modern era having an attacking full-back is a big plus.
DC: Sol Campbell
DC: John Terry

MR: David Beckham
ML: ... (struggling) - Best left winger in the last 20 years? Ryan Giggs?
MC: Paul Gascoigne
MC: Paul Scholes

ST: Alan Shearer
ST: Wayne Rooney

Ive got to say though there are plenty of players in the last 20 years who should have done better for England; In particular, the current crop of Gerrard, Lampard, and a string of goalkeepers who should have done much better!

Who's his competition Paul Parker or Gary Neville :?: Both average at best, at least he gives us something going forward. He made it in on that goal the other week
:D
