Hassocks III 5-3 Balcombe
Hassocks ran out 5-3 winners in a difficult game against Balcombe at a very very very foggy Beacon to give Steve Spies the perfect start to his managerial reign
Ollie Lambert got the opener with a shot from distance that rolled into the corner past a seemingly very bemused Balcombe keeper. He made up for this though with a superb save from debutant Jamie Weston which was the catalyst for the visitors to go down the other end just a minute later and equalise with a shot from that was well placed inside the post.
Richard Thomas made it 2-1 with a powerful run and shot and added the third from the penalty spot after Lambert made the most of being clipped. Weston made it 4-1 before half time with a clever volley from a free-kick.
After the turnaround the fog had become so bad that the stand was not viewable from the dugout, but the referee gave it time to clear and it did so rather clearly. A pretty boring second half followed until Balcombe pulled one back when a pacey attacker rounded Hassocks youth team 'keeper Reece Wickwar and finished well. Weston then split the defence open with a superb pass on the counter attack to allow Thomas to make it 5-2 with his hat-trick, and Balcombe made it a nervey last few minutes when Wickwar did well to block a shot from distance but could do nothing as the rebound was smashed in from a couple of yards.
Good game in difficult circumstances given all the fog about. Willingdon at home next for the thirds and a rare chance to play a Saturday game at the Beacon!
