disappointed

Postby Sidney » Sun Sep 02 2012, 08:17

Thought I'd start a new topic as I wouldn't want to be accused of 'high-jacking' a results thread.
Got to say I was very disappointed to hear of the going ons between lancing and hunston. With lancing, I believe, having 4 sent off and a hunston player needing stitches after a mass brawl erupted between the 2 sides. I wasn't there so can't comment on what happened, other than to offer my opinion.
I feel it is a real shame that there seems to be more and more players wanting to have a fight rather than a game of football on a Saturday afternoon. I did witness 2 players from the same team squaring up in a friendly yesterday and gotta say it was embarrassing. Idiots like these and sadly too many others are bringing down the reputation of what was once a great league to enjoy your football and maybe progress to county level. Now it seems more and more players are using it as a stage to release their frustrations and prove what a big hard man they are. Wanting to fight and argue at every given opportunity, whether it's with the ref, the opposition or their team mates. Bit like some people on this forum
This is my opinion and I'm sure some will agree and some won't.

you are right to some extent but I was fortunate to be at barnham res v west chiltington. Good football and good attitude from both sets of players. Just one yellow card for applauding the ref!!!

ouch, sounds like an expensive game of football for someone. Hope the guy with stitches isnt too badly hurt? The points you have mentioned arent massively unusual at all levels so wouldnt just isolate it to intermediate football. I seem to remember David Batty having a scrap with a team mate once up on a time? You see 10 man brawls on highlights from the professional game at least once or twice a season. Im not condoning it, but with all that adrenalin pumping in a competitive game, sometimes the cup runneth over and i'm sure those players involved wholly regret it today. I think football can learn a lot from Rugby in terms of respect for refs/opponents etc, but you always see them having a good punch up and its not widely criticised. In football its because we are all thugs though.

Anyway, lets hope it was just an early season blip and the Olympic spirit will shine through in football this season, at all levels.

Sidney in future if you're going to comment on games that you're not at then you get your facts straight before posting on here. There was only two sending offs at the game the first was for two bookings (second yellow for swearing at his own player and if every ref booked players for this there would be a lot more sendings off each week) and happened before the incident you have mentioned.
To put the record straight there was no mass brawl ( unless 3 idiots out of 21 equals a mass brawl). There was unfortunately an incident where a player from both teams ended up with bad mouth injuries. The incident was started when the ref sent off our second player for dissent and as he was leaving the pitch a Hunston player decide to make a comment (one that i couldnt put on here.) our player reacted badly and it ended up with him and a Hunston player who didnt make the comment being hurt. From what i saw myself and the rest of the players on the pitch at the time reacted well and calmed the situation down. The game then restarted and there was no further trouble.

As part of the Lancing Utd managment team i would like to put on record that we are a friendly club and we are not proud of what happen yesterday and will deal with the player involved in house and i will be telling the rest of the squad before the next game that this is not acceptable from any team of mine.
For anyone who knows myself & Glenn from our days playing in the county league you will know that we were never like that as players and would certainly not want to be involved in a team that would rather fight than play football.

I hear what you're saying about other levels of football Owl, but they have something to play for. Jobs and livelyhood at stake. I can understand why they might get caught up in the heat of the moment. What gets me is the muppets that pay £3-£5 and you know they just want to try and start something to show how 'hard' they are. No place for these people in local park football, surely it's all about enjoyment and improvement. IMHO

I played in the game, and as manager, player and committee member of Lancing United I am as dissapointed as anyone. However, the report from Sidney is way out of context. There was not a mass brawl, and we only had 2 sent off, neither for the incident he has commented on.

Our assistant manager was told to leave the pitch during the scuffle and that was it.

Facts are as follows.....

1) Our striker was sent off for 2 incidents of discent (no bad tackles or punches thrown). This was 10 minutes before the scrap.
2) Our sub was sent off for discent (as above)
3) As our sub was walking off, the young right back from Hunston (who looks a great prospect) squared up to him. Both players went head to head and their lad ended up with a bloody nose. This is inexcusable, and will be dealt with internally at our committee meeting tomorrow night. We are a family club and do not condone this behaviour. The FA will also have their official say and ban the player accordingly.
4) The next chain of events were caused by the Hunston 12 punching our sub full on in the mouth in defence of his player and leaving our sub needing 7 stitches in his chin. Unfortunately, the Hunston 12 picked on the wrong lad and he didn't flinch, and instead punched him back, with alot more effect.
5) Next the Hunston 7 had a dig, and once again, he got picked off by our sub.

Players from both sides then intervened and as things happened very quickly, nothing could have been done any sooner. There was no mass brawl, and it was an isolated incident from ONE of our players, simple as that.

After the game there were a few words exchanged and we offered to call the police in case anyone wanted to press charges for any form of assault etc. I think the fact that punches were exchanged between our lad, and a few or theirs stopped that from happening, especially as our lad copped a decent strike and had a trip to A&E for his troubles.

Whatever anyone has to say about this incident, the above are the FACTS> I saw it unfold 1st hand and was involved in splitting crowd memebers and players up. After the game I personally apologised to all of the Hunston boys, their manager and their staff, as did our Chairman and Vice Chairman. There were no further altercations and in my opinion we did well to control our player before he took any more of them out.

An experienced ref was in charge of the game (Bob Minty) and he will have the ultimate say in all of this. All I can do is apolgise, assure you all that this is not the kind of behaviour that we condone at Lancing United (we didn't have 1 player sent off last season!) and move on to the next game.

Admin might also want to lock this post now before it gets out of hand!

Bottom line is that Hunston spanked us 7-2 on our own patch and that is all that the record books will show, not any mention of a few players letting themselves down.

Cheers, and apologies once again to Hunston and the league.

Lancing lads,
I think u may have me wrong here. I did say i wasn't at the game and also said I believe 4 were sent off, obviously that wasn't true. My point however was the increasing number of numbties that always seem to be looking for a fight on a Saturday afternoon, you only have 1 so credit to you. Unfortunately most sides these days seem to have 1, or more. I'm sure u won't be in a rush to pick urs again as u seem to be an honest bunch from ur postings. I just wish every manager left them out. Just my thoughts that's all

dont think there is any need to lock the topic, its good that recnal has very well articulated what happened. Seems that Lancing management and committee are going to deal with this swiftly :ymapplause:

I think we would all agree that there are a minority of 'numpties' around that take things too far - and throwing punches is too far, thats what Sidney was getting at.

Sammylee, no, it is not OK to have 2 sent off and as I have said, we do not condone players being sent off.

However, the point I was making is that neither of the guys who were sent off, were sent off for the reasons stated in the original post which painted a completely different picture!

In fact, the 2 players were sent off for swearing, mainly in frustration at some of the decisions being made on the pitch.

......butd that yellow followed one of the worst offside decisions I have ever been on the end of which changed the game from being back in the game at 2-1 to out of the game at 3-0 as WC went straight down the other end and scored :ymapplause: :ymapplause:
