Before you all jump on it....

Postby Bob M » Thu Feb 20 2014, 14:35

A ref is part of the pitch - I understand that. But so are players?

A ref finds himself in the six yard box and a shot comes in and cannons of his bonce straight into the back of the net. If he was a forward, he'd have been in an off side position and the lino's flag goes up for offside.

Goal?

It'd be funny though wouldn't it =)) I was with four refs and they were split on this other than he'd never ref again :goodgrief:

Hi Bob, so are you saying the Assistant is flagging the ref offside? :goodgrief: Or is there a twist that he was flagging a forward offside who somehow was active and interfering with play or an opponent?
I still wear suspenders underneath my business suit....

Hi Wibby, Stringz and Crofty

I was with Dougie Holford and three others and seriously two thought it would be an offside ref and two said goal. Its hypothetical but as a sideliner (apart from falling on the floor =)) with laughter) I dunno if it'd be a goal or what. I said I'd put it to you guys who would know best (they were all retired refs by the way) - no excuse!!

Hope you are all well. Crofty when you coming over to take some photos?

Hi Bob
It would be a goal. The referee is part of play but is not classified as either defender or attacker. Equally if he was stood on the goal line between the posts and the ball was obviously going in it hit him before crossing the line play would continue as if a defender had cleared it.

I know this subject is over two years ago, but the thought did strike me as to what name goes down as the goal scorer,.......A N Other?
